The avenue du rivage bordered a portion of the merchant canal, by which a great deal of merchandise was carried on. This merchant canal was one of the most important branches of the Somme, alongside the Hotel Dieu, passing at the foot of the Collegiale, in the Guindal, between the Rue des Grandes Ecoles and the rue Lesueur, and joined the Somme at the Pont Neuf .
